Moving out

When you move out of a property where you have been using gas, electricity, water or district heating supplies, it is important for you to read your meters before you move out. This is essential, because you will be liable for any consumption until your meters have been read and you have notified your utility company of your move.

You should only tell your utility company you are moving out once you have read your meters.

How to tell the Public Utility Department that you are moving out

You can register your move online under self service (Selvbetjening), which appears at the bottom of the menu bar on the left. All you have to do is log on with your customer number and access code, which are printed at the top of your latest bill or payment summary. If you are unable to tell us online that you are moving out, you can instead send an e-mail to our customer centre, stating the address you are moving from, your meter readings and your new address.

You will receive a final statement about two weeks after you tell us you are moving out.

Special conditions for apartments

Water and heating consumption in apartments is often billed to landlords/housing associations/owner associations, etc. Therefore, you will only have to take meter readings for electricity and any gas you use and report these readings to your utility company.

Remember: you are liable for any gas or electricity used until your tenancy ends – even if you move out before the end of your tenancy.

Special conditions for owner-occupied homes

If the property in question is an owner-occupied home, it is a good idea for the vendor and the purchased to read the meters jointly when contracts are exchanged.
